There were times when Amman genre played a big role in Tamil cinema. Mookuthi Amman takes you back to those days but serves you with better meal than the older times. I would rather say Mookuthi Amman a mix of multiple genres. It’s hilarious, emotional, it carry fantasy elements and comments sarcastically on today’s political and religious beliefs. Mookuthi Amman raises questions on the fake Godmen who takes believers for granted and communicates some serious notes about their existence in society. Yes, the film has a strong resemblance to some films we came across in the past. Still Mookuthi Amman stands out because of its simplistic presentation. RJ Balaji, the actor has improved a lot better, there are times he goes overboard but his sarcastic dialogues and innocence works in favour of the film. Nayanthara looks pitch perfect as Amman, be it the colourful outfits or the jewels she looks pretty and fit and lifts up the movie with her impeccable screen presence. Urvasi excels in the subtle, wacky mother role who holds the film together. There are several ROFL moments where Urvasi steals the whole show. Ajay Ghosh’s godmen was fine. Smruthi Venkat as Balaji’s sister was impressive. Girish’s music and Dinesh cinematography falls in right place and delivers the required output.
There are instances where the narrative gets too preachy and tedious, still the ups and downs in the screenplay doesn’t disturbs your viewing. RJ Balaji, the storyteller keeps you hooked with adequate package of entertainment and delivers us with a clever message .
A Perfect Diwali treat.
